Mahmudul Haque
Mahmudul Haque was a painter and printmaker whose abstractions are built from quiet colour, fine texture, and carefully weighted line.
Biography
Born in Bagerhat in 1945, Haque completed his honours degree at the Government Art Institute in Dhaka in 1968, studying under Mohammad Kibria, whose influence he acknowledged throughout his life. He joined the Institute as a teacher in 1969 and retired in 2010 as a professor of printmaking.
He pursued postgraduate study in printmaking in Japan and taught and exhibited widely abroad. The analytic discipline of the print and the more open feeling of painting meet in his abstractions, which favour restrained palettes, layered surfaces, and a slow, even rhythm.
Haque served as director of the Institute of Fine Art in 1998 and as director general of the Bangladesh National Museum from 2004. He received the Kuwait International Biennale award in 1996 and was decorated with Japan's Order of the Rising Sun in 2019. He died in 2022.
